This is one of those books you can’t describe adequately. It’s just so much better than the bare plot sounds. A sixty-five years old man receives a letter from an old friend who is dying in a hospice on the other side of the country. He immediately writes a brief reply, gets up from the breakfast table, and walks to the post box on the corner, intending to drop his letter in the mail and return home. Instead, he keeps walking, all the way to the bedside of a woman he hasn’t seen for more than twenty years.
